Tips For Upgrading Your Imported CDs on iTunes

Posted on : 08-02-2010 | By : Blazing Minds | In : Music

Now this little tip is useful to those of you who may have had an iPod with a smaller capacity before upgrading to one with a much better one, such as an iPod Nano to an iPod Classic.

I found that when I originally upgraded to a bigger iPod I found that I had all my imported CDs recorded at 128kbps which is probably fine for most people, but I can certainly here the difference when a CD is imported with a setting of 256kbps and VBR (Variable Bit Rate), but what if you have already imported some of your CDs at a higher rate, how do you find out which ones are in a lower setting?

I’ll walk you through it, for starters we are going to use the Smart List that iTunes uses.

  1. Go into the file menu in iTunes and select File > New Smart Playlist and edit it so it is the same as the one below:
  2. This will now give you a playlist with all the tracks that are recorded at a quality less that 129kbps
  3. If you want to see the bitrate of each track then right click on any of the columns such as name, time etc to get a drop down menu with a choice of columns you can add, look for Bit Rate and click it.
  4. Now the new “Bit Rate” column will be added, if you don’t see it at first, don’t worry it may be at the end of the other columns, just scroll right and you should find it.
  5. Now if you click on this column you can sort the list via lowest to highest quality, this will show you all the tracks that are recorded at 128kbs and below.
  6. So all you have to do is see which albums you want to re-import.

Ok, there you have it, tomorrow, I’ll bringing you some tips on how to set up the recording quality when you import your CDs in iTunes ;)
