Social Media Networking In A Small Town

They call me the “Great Experiment” up here in the pines of NE Arizona. SCORE Phoenix points out that we are just a scenic hour away from the big city but oh, so far behind in matters of technology. Personally, I think the town is waking up, at last count we had a grand total of three businesses here with a Twitter account!

Now before you get upset with me and accuse me of making fun of my town let me just tell you what kind of town Payson is. But first, and foremost, I love this town, living and working here is a dream come true for a guy who worked for major corporations in the big city, risking life and limb on the freeways.

But this town is virtually dependent on tourism, its got nearly 20,000 full-time residents, swells to over 35,000 in the summers and a lot of the same types of businesses are all vying for that same tourist dollar. When you consider how easy it is to build and maintain a great blog, why would any business not see the advantage of setting themselves apart?

I think it’s because they are scared! Plain and simple. I will never forget the first time I saw the back end of a WordPress blog, my very words: “no way can I do this.” But I stuck with it and now it’s easier than ever before. All the stuff I agonized over doing “in the old days” of blogging WordPress now does it for me!
