I agree for the most part, however, I have had a few articles that the editors simply disagreed with my interpretation of the title. If you spend any time at DS you will find the titles are often pretty vague. The problem is that you can write a content rich, substantive article and an editor will interpret the title differently and essentially ask you to rewrite the entire article. In some cases, you waist a full hour and a great article for absolutely no benefit. Trust me, under these circumstances you will want to get your hands on the editor to extract the $15 of aggravation they have caused. That said, most of my articles have passed through with no rewrites at all. In the end, it doesn’t pay well at all, but it does allow you to earn a couple of bucks during your down times.

Wow, it's really bizarre! I mean that people are out there scamming folks like this and getting away with it. Sounds like she was giving you just enough here and there hoping you might recommend her to someone else during the process.

Thanks for sharing the story and I'm really glad that you have reacted so positively to this. You didn't let her get to you. Going to WordCamp must have been awesome. I can't wait to hear more about it. I'm learning a lot from you on this blog. Keep up the good work and move on to the next level.

Cheers!

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the comment. Even if this isn't a topic that interests you, I really appreciate that you took the time to stop by. I wish that I had the success that you do with website development. But it's funny how the skill sets work out - some of us are blessed with a strong talent in web development (e.g. you) and others are more interested in writing content. I can write Google-happy SEO all day long, but for the life of me, I can't come close to developing the kind of quality sites that you do!

Thank you for such a nice comment Felicia. If I had a family or if I were laid off tomorrow, I might take the same plunge you did. Some things are absolutely worth more than money!

Just to plug your site (not that you need it!) - it is really one of the most helpful sites for freelance writers on the web. Congratulations on all of your success!

Samantha, it sounds like you’re on the right track.

Sometimes you’ve got to stay with what you’ve got until you’re able to take the leap.

I remember many years ago when I was deciding whether or not it was feasible to quit my job to work from home. I calculated and figured and unfortunately realized it wasn’t time for me to take the leap.

Eventually, through a series of events, I ended up working from home as a freelance writer. My freelance writing isn’t bringing in the income that my full-time day job used to bring in, but when my job moved several hundred miles away (and I didn’t), my options were few.

Keep your day job, but don’t forget to plant freelance writing seeds as you go along. Eventually those seeds will grow and you’ll be able to take the leap when you are good and ready.

I wish you all the best.

Thank you Celeste!

I actually have a couple of articles ready to go for CC. I'm working fulltime and in the middle of moving but planning to come back soon. Thank you for the encouragement (and eventhough I'm sure you don't remember) for the support when I first joined CC last year.

Samantha,
I look forward to seeing you back on the CC site. Even if you only have time to post one or two articles per week, you could make a nice little side income.

Thanks Elizabeth...It's funny; I was thinking the same thing the other night. I can stay focused on one or two goals and write intently towards them for a short period of time and then I find myself slacking off into another endeavor out of boredom.

By the way, I really enjoyed reading through yours as well and am looking forward to see how your aStore experience works out.

Hey Samantha,

Great blog! I totally agree with your assessment of successful writers, except I'm completely ADD instead of OCD. But, oddly enough, I think freelance writing is a perfect profession for someone with a short attention span. Basically you focus intently on one topic for a short amount of time and then move on. ha ha Anyway, always great to meet another writer. Thanks for sharing your expertise!

Cheers,
Elizabeth
